‘Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers’ is a giant steel structure made by Ray Lonsdale, an artist, fabricator and sculptor and is now on permanent display, thanks to the generosity of a local Scarborough resident.

The sculpture is based on a retired miner Ray became friends with who turned out to also be one of the first soldiers to relieve the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the end of World War II.

This piece of art is not just about Freddie Gilroy but represents all the normal people that were pulled out of an ordinary life and forced into a very extraordinary and dangerous one during the World Wars.

Ray Lonsdale, sculptor from County Durham said:

“Scarborough is a unique town and I am pleased that my ‘Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers’ will be on show there for residents and visitors alike to look at and enjoy. This piece is almost a war memorial as it depicts the lives of all those who suffered during the World Wars”.

“I hope that people get enjoyment from my sculptures but also reflect on the sensitivity and emotion which I have tried to convey through my work.”

The sculpture is located near to the Oasis Cafe on Scarborough’s North Bay.

Ray also has ‘High Tide in Short Wellies’ sculpture on the beach front near the Coble Landing in Filey and an exhibition in the Arts Bank at Saltburn-by the-Sea .

Following my quest to find the traditional list for our Christmas stocking, William’s grandma came up with 11 of them! This list comes from her mum and back to Victorian times. From the top of the stocking:

Something smelly (generally soap back in the days, but could be also perfume, lavender sachets for our wardrobes etc…)

Something to play with (small toy)

Something that makes a noise (preferably musical) William is having a gazoo in his!

Something to write with (note pad and pen, colouring book and pens etc…)

Something to read (William is going to have a little story book about the spirit of Christmas)

Something to wear (Well, Andy is having his usual renewal of pants and socks note for the ladies: razor blades are a good stocking filler!)

Festive Fair: nuts,

Tangarine/clementine/orange

Apple

Something novel to eat (William’s Grandma used to have the chocolate cigarettes! I used to love them, particular chocolate taste! But you probably have noticed that they’ve been banned now… Today would be usually the chocolate coins)

Lucky charm (silver coin in Victorian times, today is usually £1 coin)

Now, Grandma couldn’t remember the last one!

If you have a similar list from your family’s tradition, I would love to compare it, don’t hesitate to have your input by leaving a comment!

More to come on our traditional Christmas. Until then, have a lovely and happy festive time!

Una.

Just 5 minutes walk from our holiday flats is Scarborough Castle. Originally built as a Roman outpost and mixing fun with education, Scarborough Castle is definitely one of the things to do in Scarborough. It boasts some of the best views of the North and South Bay. Its story from its beginnings as a prehistoric site, through the Roman times, used by the Saxons, Vikings, Normans, Tudors and was even involved in the 1st (when it was shelled by German gunboats) and 2nd (as a listening post) World Wars!! There is plenty of room for picnicking, kite-flying or Frisbee in the vast castle grounds and if you really get bored of that stuff you can do the official tour! (only kidding..I’ve done it and it’s great!) You take the tour at your own pace and is accompanied by your own personal commentary device (handy if the kids want to go ahead a bit). Actors play out scenes from the different times inter-dispersed with interesting historical facts. The authentic tour naturally ends with the keep (the main bit) and the stories really enhance your imagination of a long gone time. It really is worth a visit and there is also a coffee house if you run out of steam.
